For guitar, I started in the fifth position. The reason I chose the fifth position is that it is centered on the staff and on the neck. One big advantage the Extreme Reading Series has is the fact that you’re working with moveable patterns. The same concept was used in The Bassist’s Link to Sight Reading only starting in the second position. The objective with the drum book was to focus on leadsheets, as well as drum notation. All three books contain a professionally recorded play-along CD using live players.

The Pay Off
I really began to see the light when I met with a student who had been doing my exercises. I pulled out a Real Book chart and started to explain what he was supposed to do. I was interrupted by the sound of the melody coming from his guitar! Wow, I thought. It was as though he had gone through a method book for beginner guitarists, only what he had learned was much more usable because it was in the middle of the neck, using movable patterns. It was then that I realized this could be a great book AND an indispensable teaching tool for instructors and self taught players.
